The bend in the road shortly before arriving at the fromt gate. As
I recall, the dependent housing area was to the left behind a
chain-link fence.
The village of Wilhelmshausen in the background.
The road we knew at the time is at the right. At the gate (which
is no longer there) it took a right turn. The theater was then on the
left and the Icarus statue on the right.
I have been confused about this, but I believe Silvia was able to
explain this layout to me. The road bending to the right goes down the
hill to the village of Knickhagen.
Just inside the gate on the right stood the statue of Icarus.
In Greek mythology Icarus attempted to escape from Crete by means of
wings that his father Daedalus constructed from feathers and
wax. He ignored instructions not to fly too close to the sun, and the
melting wax caused him to fall into the sea where he drowned.
Silvia:
"The Ikarus statue had been there since 1936. When the Bundeswehr
closed the air base, the statue had been stored, and now is to be found
at the shooting range of air defense in Todendorf (Baltic Sea)"
I may be wrong but I seem to recall that the structure (M1 on the
map) just inside the gate, and adjoining the Theater, was the armory.
Balcony across the front of the Theater (M1)
The Air Police building (A1). I think the road to the right joins the
other one going to Knickhagen
Front entrance to the Air Police
building
Just across the street from the AP building was the HQ building.
Previously HQ was in A3. Sometime around 1955 it was moved here to S1.
Another look at S1. It appears that it has been added on to and
possibly other buildings added further on. The clock on building A6 in
the background.
The streets have been given names. Here at Ikarusweg (Icarus Way)
we look back at the spot where the main gate once stood.
A new street
There will be more. I am slow getting this done. Hoping to recover from
a serious case of procrastination.
